The first week of Summer I thought to myself, "How will we ever get through three months of entertaining all the kids home at once". Surprisingly, I'm alittle sad to see it all end. Once we got in a groove they seemed to entertain themselves most of the time. McKay read more books in three months than I have read in the past ten years. One night I was getting a little frusterated that he kept staying up past his bed time reading. As I went to sleep I realized that most mothers would give their right eye to have to tell their child to stop reading Ivanhoe. We try to go to the library as often as possible to keep him well supplied. I've learned that if he has a good book to read he is much less likely to bother his sisters.
Emma and Lauren have become good buddies this summer. They love playing house and dress up and with the new Barbies Grandma Shurtz gave them. Lauren decided one of her summer goals was to learn to sew. We just about have her skirt project finished up. She is definitely a born fashion designer. For her it is all about sequins and beads and finding just the right trim. Mom is getting better and better at biting her tongue.
Sierra has stayed busy getting into anything she can get her hands on. We call her the Daredevil with a Smile, after the famous olympic gymnast, because she loves to climb up on high narrow places, when you rush to her saying, "No, No," she looks at you, laughs, and flashes an impish smile.
Though it will be nice to have a little quiet time with the older kids in school, I will miss our lazy mornings of waking up at our own convenience and spontaneously doing whatever we're in the mood for that day. The early morning rush of packing lunches, finding socks, fixing breakfast, reviewing spelling and rushing out the door will be here far too soon. Not to mention ballet, piano and soccer to squeeze in. I guess all good things must come to an end eventually.
