7 going on 17

We celebrated Lauren's birthday a day early at school. The girls and I went to Marsh Pointe Elementary and had lunch in the cafeteria with her. Emma and Sierra were feeling quite mature to have their own cafeteria food. Lauren had fun showing us the ropes, and showing off her siblings to her classmates. then we went outside and had cupcakes and sang to her.

our favorite, neighbors/adopted grandparents/close friends, Gregg and Sande came over to wish her a happy birthday. She was so excited to receive a ballerina jewelry box.

The best present of all was having Aunt Becca and Uncle Kevin come to visit that night. We took them for a "walk" on the beach. (Perhaps a walk "in" the beach is a better description)

It didn't take long before everyone was drenched.

On Saturday we had a cookout with Aunt Becca, Uncle Ken, Aunt Meghan, Uncle Jon and the cousins. We swam for a little while and then had strawberry angel food cake.

She received a diary with lock and key and a pen to keep up with her love of writing. (yes McKay has already snuck into it and made his own comments)
That night she and McKay performed in a quartet at a piano recital. They played the song Cuckoo.

It was a busy but wonderful birthday. Lauren is such a blessing to me. She really is like a second mother to her younger sisters. I took a trip to Texas the day after her birthday. I brought Sierra and Savannah with me. Sierra was quite a handful. She was getting into everything and really keeping me on my toes. I started wondering why she usually isn't this difficult, and I realized it's because she usually has Lauren and Emma to entertain her and keep her on track. Her younger sisters look up to Lauren so much. She really is such a great example to them of a beautiful, thoughtful, virtuous young lady.
Another little funny birthday experience is that I heard the doorbell ring the day before her birthday. It's odd for us to have people come by unannounced because we live so far out of the way. Lauren looked out the window, turned white as a ghost, and whispered to me, "don't open the door." I looked out to see a boy from her class carrying a very large present wrapped in gold foil with a big beautiful bow. I invited him and his twin brother in to play for a minute while I went and introduced myself to their mother. She shared how much her son admired Lauren and how he was sure he truly loved her. I'm used to first grade crushes lasting about 2 days, a week at tops, but Cruz has "loved her from the first day of school". He gave her a highschool musical Charpay barbie with all the accessories. (and yes, McKay has stuck her in the toilet and then tried to fix her by blowdrying her hair, which melted it into one big glump)
So that about wraps up the 7th birthday highlight.
We love you Lauren. My best mother's day ever was bringing you home from the hospital.
