Last Thursday Russ and McKay flew out to Utah for a great bonding adventure. Perhaps the most exciting part of the trip was when McKay threw up all over the ramp as he was deboarding the plane. He also threw up in the rental car, which makes this the second time our cousin Matt has volunteered to help clean up our stinky car when we have arrived to stay with him. After they got that out of the way, they had the time of their lives
First thing Friday morning they went fishing with Aunt Catherine and her friend Todd. McKay learned how to properly cast the rod. After concluding that the fish weren't biting, they went for a hike up to Stewart Falls. For a boy who has lived most of his life without changing seasons, and without mountains, it was a breathtaking experience.

The reward for the two-mile hike was to see the beautiful Stewart Falls. Catherine really went out of her way to take off work and be their special Utah guides for the day. The gesture not lost on a 9 year old nephew. After enjoying a morning of nature in the mountains, they headed to BYU to check out the bookstore (McKay made sure each of his sisters came home with a BYU souvenier), sports museum and restaurant and of course, to see the cougars play football. McKay loved seeing his first BYU Football game in the Lavell Edwards Stadium. Their win against Utah State was the icing on the cake for a perfect day.
Not much could top their Friday, except maybe seeing a prophet of the Lord in person. Russ and McKay were able to go to the conference center and hear General Conference. The talks were powerful and the Spirit of the Lord was felt strongly. I hope McKay will always remember this special opportunity. He loves listening to CD's of past conference talks as he goes to sleep, I think in a way he almost feels like he knows the apostles personally, since he listens to their stories, experiences and advice so often.

McKay mentioned that he would really like to go ice skating while he was in Utah. So Saturday afternoon they laced up their skates and were off. Uncle Gene came along with some of his children. Rachel was a very patient instructor to McKay.

I believe "Daddy get-aways" are now a new tradition. It was the perfect age for McKay to have some time to think about his future, his dreams, his testimony, and "how sweet his life is".
