Alaska Get Away (Skagway)

Skagway was a day filled with lots of adventures. It was extremely cold, especially for us Floridians, so we started off my buying ear warmers. Then we hit the bike shop to rent a bike for an adventure through the Tongass National Forest. We happened to ride by the church on our outing, it was fun to see the little chapel. We got a map from the bike shop and learned about a loop that took us around the outskirts of town. We rode for some time, some of it was a little hilly and strenuous, but overall we did pretty well. We ended up on a trail deep in the forest, and finally hit a nice stretch that was all down hill. Russ commented, "I sure hope this is the right way, because if we have to come back up this hill it's going to be a killer". We soon realized we were no longer seeing the town we were supposed to be looping around, but rather going deeper into the forest. We finally saw a truck transporting rafters, and learned we had indeed missed the turn off path. Back up the mountain we went. After our ride we went on a tour of the town by a ranger from the National Parks. We learned lots of history about the gold rush and about some of the town villians, namely Soapy Smith.
